Oberlin College Celebrates Black History Month

Oberlin College Celebrates Black History Month Oberlin College will observe Black History Month 2010 with a series of speakers, social events, and performances that celebrate black history, showcase Oberlin’s black community, and present perspectives on black culture today. Among the many programs will be a presentation by civil rights activist and educator Prexy Nesbitt on February 14 and a performance by Oberlin’s Black Musicians Guild on February 21.

New Art Therapy Program Will Help Students Decompress Starting February 17, Oberlin’s Center for Leadership in Health Promotion (CLHP) will offer an art therapy program designed to help students unwind through painting, drawing, and other creative ventures. “Art therapy is a way for students to decompress, get out of their head, and just take a moment to relax,” says CLHP director Lori Morgan Flood.

Robert Bosch Awarded Mathematical Art Exhibition First Prize Professor of Mathematics and Robert and Eleanor Biggs Professor of Natural Science Robert Bosch, who produces works of art constructed with the aid of mathematical optimization techniques, was recently awarded first prize at the Mathematical Art Exhibition for Embrace, a sculpted variation of a continuous line drawing. Constructed from stainless steel and brass, the work is an artistic rendition of a solution to the traveling salesman problem.

Mitchell’s piece will be on view until August 22, 2010.
