The Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire Gene Robinson, widely known as the first openly gay and partnered bishop of a major Christian denomination and the religious leader who delivered the invocation at Barack Obama’s kickoff inaugural event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial this past January, will speak at Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m.

OBERLIN, OHIO -- Fifty-seven liberal arts college presidents have proclaimed in an open letter their support for the Federal Research Public Access Act of 2009 (S.1373). The letter notes the importance of liberal arts colleges for the nation’s scientific and scholarly productivity, the colleges’ record of producing Ph.D.s who become active researchers, and the lack of access to research literature at these colleges and other higher education institutions due to economic factors.

A multi-faith celebration will mark the installation of the Reverend Gregory McGonigle as the first director of the College's Office of Religious and Spiritual Life on Friday, September 11 in the meeting house of First Church in Oberlin.

John Payton, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, will present Constitution Day address September 16.

The White House announced today President Barack Obama’s intent to nominate Jacqueline A. Berrien '83 as Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms. Berrien graduated with high honors in government and has been a member of the Oberlin College Board of Trustees since 2007.

Last night, actors Danny DeVito and wife Rhea Perlman, along with director James Burrows and his wife, Debbie, helped Oberlin celebrate the grand reopening of the Apollo Theatre. The theater was purchased by Oberlin College in February and was closed all summer for renovations. “For the college, acquiring the Apollo was an unexpected opportunity that arrived at a challenging time,” Krislov said. “Given the economic circumstances, the fact that we were able to move so quickly to buy, renovate and reopen this theater tells you how much the Apollo means to this community.”

A feature in the November 2009 issue of The Strad praised Professor of Viola Peter Slowik for his work with the summer program Credo, held annually on the Oberlin campus. "Oberlin College Conservatory, home to the festival, is no run-of-the-mill institution," observes writer Heather Kurzbauer, noting the college's progressive history as "a trendsetter in the early 19th century. In the new millennium," she continues, "a college famed for its combination of academic study and high-level music offers outstanding facilities and moral support for Credo’s mission." Slowik, "a man of limitless enthusiasm and purpose," personifies Credo's dual purpose of musical excellence and faith-based community service. "While many an esteemed pedagogue spends the summer months jetting off to masterclasses around the globe, Slowik gets down to the nitty-gritty of teaching in his own backyard," writes Kurzbauer. "Refuting the very notion that teaching can be tedious, Slowik infuses his lessons with the powerful dynamics of give and take." Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge is used to his opinions being controversial.
“I’m at the age where I can take the heat,” Burge said. “You don’t feel it after a while.” While Burge may be criticized in some quarters, he was hailed as a “very courageous” jurist by moderator Pamela Brooks, Oberlin College associate professor of African-American studies, when she introduced him as a panelist Monday night.
